In anticipation of teaching a place-based creative nonfiction workshop in 2013, I photographed the land that is now New Belgium Brewery in Asheville, NC. This land hosted the Buncombe Co. African American Agricultural Fair (1916 - 1947), Penland's Auction House (1955 - 2012), and WNC Livestock Market (for 40+ years). Three days after I took these photos, arson took every building to the ground. Read more about the history of West Asheville, NC as narrated by oral historians who grew up here.
